On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. The first commenter to correctly identify it as a ’70s Subaru GL (specifically, it’s a 1972 Subaru GL coupe) was lh425cd, who will receive a Save the Manuals magnet and sticker as a reward.
The GL pictured here is from our October 1972 issue. Not an all-new car, it instead was a refresh of an existing model. As you’d expect from a Subaru, the GL had a slightly oddball design aesthetic—it kind of looked like a contemporary Toyota Celica with a gland issue—but drove nicely. It was powered by a boxer four-cylinder engine, which operated through a four-speed manual transmission. Output stood at a decent-for-the-time 80 horsepower and 73 lb-ft of torque. Strapped to 1810 pounds of GL, this was good for a 12.6-second trip to 60 mph.
